ITV News has apologized after giving airtime to an Iranian state television journalist who described Hamas’ attack on Israel as a “moment of triumph”.

ITV News London interviewed Latifa Abouchakra on Monday, describing her as a “British Palestinian living in London” and citing her views on the discrimination faced by Muslims in Britain.

The ITN-produced news program did not reveal that Abouchakra works as a reporter for Press TV, the Iranian propaganda machine which is banned from broadcasting in Britain.

In an October 7 Instagram post, Abouchakra praised Hamas’ attack on Israel, which killed more than 1,400 people.

“Nothing will ever take back this moment, this moment of triumph, this moment of resistance, this moment of surprise, this moment of humiliation in the name of Zionist unity,” she said.

Abouchakra also used her platform on the Press TV show Palestine was released They celebrated the attack as a “homecoming,” adding that “the Zionist entity is trembling with fear.”

Marie van der Zyl, chair of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, wrote to ITV boss Carolyn McCall this week, calling the interview a “catastrophic breach” of journalistic standards.

“We condemn any Islamophobic comments that Ms. Abouchakra received, but you must be aware that although there are many British Muslims who could have invited you and who could have rightly complained about her, Ms. Abouchakra wrongly associated with terrorists because of her. Your own performance is not included,” Van der Zyl said.

In a reply to the Board of Deputies of British Jewry, ITV News editor Andrew Dagnell apologized Jewish Chronicle And Daily email. Deadline has contacted ITV and ITN for comment.

“Please be assured that we would not have included the author you refer to had we known of her previous comments,” Dagnell reportedly wrote.

“We recognize that better due diligence should have taken place before she came into the picture. We apologize. ITV News London will tighten procedures for booking interviewees.

“ITV News has a responsibility to ensure accuracy and appropriate impartiality. We take this responsibility very seriously when we report on the situation in Israel and Gaza.”
