Faced with rising violence in Palestine, model Gigi Hadid expressed her nuanced point of view on her Instagram account followed by nearly 80 million people on October 10, 2023.
“My thoughts go out to everyone affected by this unjustifiable tragedy, and every day Innocent lives are lost as a result of this conflict, including too many children. I feel deep empathy and pain for the Palestinian struggle and life under occupation, it is a responsibility that I take on every day. I also feel responsible to my Jewish friends to clearly state, as I have already done:
While I have hopes and dreams for the Palestinians, none of them include harm to a Jewish person.
The use of terrorism against innocent people is not in line with the Free Palestine movement and brings no benefit. The idea that this was the case fueled a painful cycle of retaliation that lasted decades (including no innocent civilian, Palestinian or Israeli, deserves to be a victim), and helps to perpetuate it the misconception that being pro-Palestinian = anti-Semitic.
If you are suffering, as I share my condolences today to my loved ones, Palestinians and Jews, I send you my love and strength, whoever you are and wherever you are. There are many complex, personal and valid feelings, but every human being deserves basic rights, care and safety; regardless of their nationality, religion, ethnicity or place of birth.
I know my words will never be enough and will never heal the deep wounds of so many people, but I always pray for the safety of innocent lives. »
When the State of Israel’s Instagram account scolds Gigi Hadid
A few hours before this message commemorating the Palestinian and Israeli victims, Gigi Hadid had shared in an ephemeral story a publication (from the account @consent.wizardry) which stated:
“There is nothing Jewish about the way the Israeli government treats the Palestinians. Condemning the Israeli government is not anti-Semitic and supporting the Palestinians does not mean supporting Hamas.”
This is what the certified Instagram account of the State of Israel reacted to on the same day, the media reports The Hollywood journalist :
“Gigi Hadid, were you sleeping last week? Or are you just good at turning a blind eye to Jewish children who were murdered in their homes? Your silence reveals where you are. We see you.
There is nothing courageous about Hamas’ massacre of Israelis. Condemning Hamas for what it is (ISIS) is not anti-Palestinian and supporting the Israelis in their fight against the barbaric terrorists is the right thing to do. »
Bella, Gigi Hadid and their family are now receiving death threats
Since then, this ephemeral statement released by the certified Instagram account of the State of Israel, the model and her family (her sister Bella, brother Anwar, Dutch mother Yolanda and Palestinian father Mohamed) have received numerous anonymous death threats , media reports TMZ. Usually very outspoken about the occupation of Palestine, Bella Hadid has yet to react publicly. By considering how every position taken by public figures becomes polarized, even provoking violent reactions, we can understand why.
