Prada is teaming up with commercial space company Axiom Space to design spacesuits for NASA’s Artemis III mission in 2025. It will be the first crewed moon landing since 1972. And, importantly, the first time a woman lands on the Moon. It will be Christina Hammock Koch (remember incidentally that in 2019 NASA wanted to send a female team into space, but in the end had to replace them with men, due to lack of spacesuits of the right size…).
Prada will help design the spacesuit for the Artemis program
For the occasion, Prada teams collaborate with those of Axiom Space to research and develop materials suitable for the space mission and the lunar environment, reports Fashion business. Lorenzo Bertelli, marketing director of the Prada group which is preparing to take over the company from its parents, Miuccia Prada and Patrizio Bertelli, declared via press release:
“Prada’s consistently forward-thinking philosophy for humanity has expanded [un] desire for adventure and to challenge new horizons: space. Our decades of experimentation, cutting-edge technology and design know-how […] will now be applied to the design of a spacesuit for the Artemis program. It is a true celebration of the power of human creativity and innovation to advance civilization. »
Space, the new frontier of luxury and its ultra-rich customers
Thus, from the simple inspiration of key designers of the 1960s such as André Courrèges, Paco Rabanne and Pierre Cardin, the houses are directly associated with the conquest of space. While space tourism may soon become a new hobby for the ultra-rich, luxury players are starting to position themselves in it. While Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are at war for this niche, the Virgin Galactic company flew the first crew of tourists beyond the curvature of the Earth in August 2023, with tickets ranging from $250,000 to $450,000. Fashion business.
Since this field requires a lot of technicality, precision, research and innovation, this could interest the fashion industry to think about increasingly efficient clothes and inspire confidence in the general public in its know-how. If Prada knows how to dress astronauts in space, why not on Earth. The AxEMU spacesuit by Axiom Space in collaboration with Prada therefore reveals how space is already establishing itself as the future of luxury.
