Wednesday 4 October marks the 65th anniversary of the Constitution of the Fifth Republic. For the occasion, Emmanuel Macron reiterated his desire to constitutionalize the right to abortion during a speech delivered to the Constitutional Council.
A writing in the Constitution “as soon as possible”
Before the Constitutional Council, the president welcomed it “a Constitution that has become the most stable in our entire history” before presenting the different axes of the reform he intends to implement. Among these, the question of the constitutionalization of abortion, already raised on March 8, on the occasion of International Women’s Rights Day.
“DA few months ago, parliamentary initiatives were adopted to enshrine in the Constitution the freedom of women to resort to voluntary termination of pregnancy […] On 8 March I expressed the hope that a text could be found that would reconcile the points of view between the National Assembly and the Senate and allow the convening of a Congress in Versailles. I hope that this work of gathering points of view will resume and conclude as soon as possible. “.
