Marvel Studios will release a colorized version of Werewolf at night for Halloween this year, and this version of the film will pay homage to the Hammer horror films of the ’60s and ’70s.
The director of the film, Michele Gioacchino, recently spoke about the film and discussed how the color version of the film affects the ending of the Marvel Special. One of the concerns that had been with how the black and white film transitions to color at the end, would coloring the entire film affect this?
Speaking to Marvel, Giacchino said: “I had one concern, which was obviously with black and white, there’s a big twist at the end when you go to colour. The intention was for Elsa to create a completely new world. The possibilities are endless. What will she do with this new power that she has?”
The director continued: “This was reflected in bringing color to a place that had been a sad part of his life for years. She finally managed to give it color. I was worried, how would this affect the narrative if everything was in color? … But after seeing it, I still felt the same way. I still felt the same about everything. It’s certainly a different experience than black and white, but it’s simply a different experience. It’s just, like I said, a new way of experiencing that story.
So if you were worried about that ending, don’t be.
“Now presented in vibrant color, Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night in Color is set on a dark and brooding night, when a secret cabal of monster hunters emerges from the shadows and gathers in the eerie Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. In a strange and macabre memorial to the leader’s life, participants are drawn into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic, a hunt that will ultimately bring them face to face with a dangerous monster. Inspired by horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, the chilling special aims to evoke a sense of dread and the macabre, with plenty of suspense and scares along the way as we explore a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The project is a throwback to the black and white horror films of the 1930s and 1940s. The story centers on a group of unusual suspects brought together on an eerie night, and one of them is the Night Werewolf. They find themselves in a position where they are forced to stay alive as the end of the night approaches.
Disney+ will debut the color version of Werewolf by Night on Disney+ on October 20, teasing that it will now have “bright colors.”
