The 75th festival will be the last for the retired festival director Pierre Lescure, who has held this position for many years. She will be succeeded by Iris Knobloch, the first woman elected to the post.
This year’s film festival opened with “Final Cut” directed by Michel Hazanavicius, a remake of Shinichiro Ueda’s student film “One Plan Zombies!”, which has become a cult film in Japan. This movie was originally announced under the name Z, but was renamed on the ground of a military special operation at the request of the residents of Ukraine.
This year the Cannes Film Festival refused to accept a Russian delegation because of the military special operation in Ukraine, but made an exception for directors Kirill Serebrennikov, Andrey Zvyagintsev and Alexander Sokurov. Despite the invitation, Sokurov refused to participate in the festival with his film “Fairy Tale”.
The premiere of Kirill Serebrennikov’s new film, Tchaikovsky’s Wife, starring Odin Byron, Yulia Aug and Oxxxymiron, will be held today.
At the opening of the film festival, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the guests via satellite. In his 10-minute speech, he stated that his country continues to fight.
Earlier it was also known that Russian journalists were denied accreditation to the Cannes Film Festival, despite the fact that the film by Russian director Kirill Serebrennikov was included in the main program of the festival.
The Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 17-28.
