An agreement in principle has been reached in Hollywood to end the writers’ strike

Will the strike shaking Hollywood end soon? Hollywood screenwriters and actors have been on strike for almost five months, also demanding better wages the largest share of profits generated by streaming.

In addition to better salary expectations, actors and screenwriters are demanding better intellectual property in the face of artificial intelligence (AI) and software like ChatGPT. The first, demanding that their texts never serve as a writing basis for the software, and the second, the guarantee that studios never use artificial intelligence to imitate their appearance or voice.

After several months of silent dialogue, the heads of major film studios such as Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros and NBC Universal have been in talks with the WGA union since September 20, the Hollywood reporter.

Discussions that continued for many daysand that it would result in a “meaningful” deal for screenwriters, the union announced in a letter to its members: “We have reached agreement in principle on a new (minimum basic agreement) 2023, i.e. agreement in principle on all points of the agreement, without prejudice to the final wording of the contract”.

An “exceptional agreement” welcomes the WGA

This agreement seems to have satisfied all parties: “We can say, with great pride, that this agreement is exceptional – with significant gains and protections for screenwriters in all sectors of the members’ activities »welcomed the WGA.

But that doesn’t mean the writers can get back on track just yet: “To be clear, no one should return to work unless expressly authorized by the Guild. Until then we will still be on strike. But starting today we will suspend the WGA pickets.”the union added.
