“It is very difficult for me to see myself skating”: Roman Kostomarov’s first interview after surgery

In January, Roman Kostomarov’s life was divided into before and after. He was hospitalized with pneumonia, then complications began, sepsis developed and blood circulation was impaired. During the onset of gangrene, both his feet and fingers were amputated. Despite what happened, Roman chose life and is now actively involved in his recovery process. And now he gave his first interview on the television program “The Secret of a Million”. We tell you the most important things from the first part of the interview!

Roman Kostomarov was 27 years old when he proposed to figure skater Yulia Lautova. The athlete says about his relationship with the girl: “When the love started, I had to go to America and train there, but she stayed here. We saw each other at most twice a year: at competitions and when I flew to Moscow. All my money was spent on phone calls. “I was getting $1,000 in debt.” Roman admitted that he proposed with passion and youth. And living together changed the couple’s relationship. The euphoria that existed during long-distance phone conversations was no longer present. It was also learned that Julia was cheating on her husband.

Situations in sports career

Roman Kostomarov admitted that he is a hooligan. He was always scolded. The coaches and the federation president did not like him. The skater’s coach Alexander Zhulin came to the program. He told how he punished the champion who came to training with a hangover. It’s simple: Roman paid $100, and with each replay the bet increased by the same amount.

“It’s hard for me to see myself skating. Sometimes you see workout videos or photos on your phone; It is very painful to look at yourself with your legs and arms. “This is not the case now, and it will remain so forever.”

Relationship with Oksana Domnina

The skaters got married almost a decade after their relationship. Kostomarov did not dare to marry, considering it a formality. In October 2013, Oksana left him without hiding anything. It was fair. Kostomarov says recognizing the girl was a powerful move. This was a shock to him. “Complete destruction, escape into the abyss. And at the same time you still need to work and perform. It was very difficult. It seemed like it would last forever. “I didn’t understand how to accept the fact that he wouldn’t be in my life,” says the skater, describing her feelings during the breakup. Roman admitted that he could behave inappropriately on tour while under the influence of alcohol. Oksana Domnina herself commented on her separation from Kostomarov as follows: “There was a crisis in our relationship. “The separation is a result of our previous disagreements.”
