Good lesbians! The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) condemned Bulgaria on 5 September 2023 for refusing to recognize the union of a lesbian couple abroad.

As reported Komitid, these are two Bulgarian citizens who got married in 2016 in the United Kingdom, where they had lived for seven years. Darina Koilova and Lilly Babulkova, both 37, now live in Sofia, the country’s capital. Only that the Bulgarian authorities have refused to recognize their marital status in the civil status registers, depriving them of the legal protections that could derive from it.
Now the ECHR agrees with him by condemning Bulgaria for” violation of rights guaranteeing respect for private and family life The court also asked the country to pay the applicants €3,000 in legal fees.
While the Bulgarian public remains relatively hostile towards LGBTQI+ people in Bulgaria, this court ruling could help change its legislation and administrative practices. Note that this Balkan country does not allow same-sex marriage or civil partnership.
