3 food tips to lighten the mental and parenting load

With the start of the new school year and all that entails in terms of organization, we offer you three tips that can help lighten things up a bit.

Cooking when you’re tired in the evening, it’s hot. But as adults, if we decide to eat only delivered hamburgers or packaged cereals, it is our problem, our health. On the other hand, when it comes to feeding our children, it’s different. We want them to eat properly, healthily, as much as possible. But the worry is that between one job and another, picking up the youngest from kindergarten, the big one from school kindergarten, all while having two machines to run and showers to take, the time (and motivation) end. Even dividing the household tasks with the life partner (who, we remember, shouldn’t help us, but play his part) is hot.

The days go by quickly, the hours go by, time is running out and tiredness increases. If we can’t handle your kids for you (we already have enough to do with ours, you’ll agree), we can also share our three time-saving tips, at least on food.

Batch cooking, to plan ahead

The idea, which is anything but new, consists in preparing on Sundays, for two hours or less, all the dishes that will be eaten on the following evenings of the week. In concrete terms, you sacrifice a few hours on the weekend to anticipate the next meals, and save time during the week. We put all the dishes that we have prepared in the refrigerator or freezer and saute, reheat when the time comes. The idea is excellent, not too complicated to set up, you just need to be able to free up time to do everything, and organize yourself well. It’s not a trick for everyone, but it’s a good way to anticipate and free up time when the evening tunnel arrives.

If you lack inspiration for recipes to prepare in advance that everyone can enjoy, there are many books, including the famous one I cook in batches all year round by Sandra Thomann published by Hachette editions.

Ready meals

In addition to the jars given with a teaspoon and which unfortunately do not match in terms of taste and textures (some, not all) we have found two brands that are changing and innovating in terms of taste.

Yooji, organic products grown in France

The first is Yooji : for the little ones, for those in full food diversification. The concept is great: very small portions of different shapes that can be frozen and reheated during the meal. Level amount to give, you can adjust it according to your heir’s appetite and level taste, it’s really not bad. The produce is organic and grown in France and steamed before being frozen. You can even mix multiple flavors together to really vary meals. It is a valid aid from the beginning of food diversification and up to approximately 12 months. You can find these products in many shops, or have them delivered in Chronofresh directly to your home. In terms of prices, it’s reasonable: starting at €3.95 for a package, which allows you to prepare around 3 meals. Handy to solve the problems of lazy evenings!

Paupiette, dishes to put in the fridge

The second brand we wanted to tell you about is Paupietta. This time it’s for the grown-ups! The dishes are complete, delivered directly to your home, in trays to put directly in the fridge. The meals are varied and above all very good: even adults want to type them. Each plate weighs approximately 250g, great for a 6-10 year old. I personally did the test with my 2 year old son and he swallowed everything, but I think he is an ogre, not a child, that might explain it. But it is possible, if you have younger children, to divide the meal in two if the quantities seem excessive to you (and eat the rest in a crust). Price-wise, it’s more expensive: 6 dishes for €48, or €8 per dish. You can buy more and the prices decrease depending on the quantity.

Don’t feel guilty and accept the fact that you can’t be everywhere

Last tip, but not the easiest: accept that you can’t handle everything. Yes, good nutrition is important. It’s important for all kinds of reasons, growth, development, relationship with food, health. But do you also know what is important? Your mental health and its impact on the atmosphere at home. If your head is underwater because there’s too much to handle, and alone or as a couple it’s already pretty tough, don’t feel guilty about calling yourself a bad mother because your kids haven’t eaten 5 fruits and veggies this week per day. day. It happens, we do what we can, how we can, and the next week might be better. If Jean-Edouard eats pasta with cheese 5 nights a week, he won’t even turn into a louse, we promise. Not to mention that if he has lunch in kindergarten or canteen he still has some, his nutritional intake of him.

Stop berating yourself, opt for the options that seem more convenient to you based on your living conditions, and do what you can to keep the boat afloat.
