CON AIR and TOMB RAIDER director Simon West to direct epic drama ANTARA, set in Saudi Arabia

Director Simon West (Air conditioning, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the Expendables) is embarking on a new project which will be filmed at Neom’s Bajdah Studios. The epic drama set in Saudi Arabia, Antara, will be an English-language blockbuster based on Arab history. It will tell the story of Antara ibn Shaddad, an enslaved warrior who was elevated to mythic status in the 6th century after he won his freedom and became a beloved knight and a widely celebrated Bedouin poet in the region.

Production on the film will begin in early 2024 and run for 12 weeks. Start Antara is kept hidden. Variety reports that the film will tap into Neom’s more than 40 percent cash rebate for productions and provide new soundstages and accommodations as well as local talent and crew. The film will be set at Neom’s state-of-the-art Bajdah Studios.

Neom boasts breathtaking landscapes of canyons, desert and a long stretch of pristine Red Sea coastline. Neom, which is located in Tabuk province, is also the site of a rapidly building futuristic city.

West said in a statement:

“Bringing the story of Antara ibn Shaddad to the big screen and to the public is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to continue his legend, Antara’s life is one of those relatively little-known true stories that prove that this fact can be much stranger than the fiction.

We will provide you with more information on the story as the film project develops.
