On August 23, 2023, India became the first country to land a spacecraft at the south pole of the moon.

The Chandrayaan-3 apparatus left Sriharikota cosmodrome on July 14 and began its journey to the Moon, then reaching lunar orbit, slowly approaching its surface, and then soft landing. In total, the path of the apparatus took 42 days.

The USA, USSR, and China have reached the moon before, but none have managed to land on the moon to the surface of the south pole. Thus, India entered the history of space science.
This important event was watched by the whole world: it was broadcast live on the Indian Space Research Organisation’s YouTube channel.
Roskosmos and Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated their Indian colleagues. The President also noted that this is a big step in space exploration.
What will happen next? Chandrayaan-3 and the lunar rover will be on a two-week mission to the Moon, during which they will assess the south pole for the presence of frozen water previously detected by the Chandrayaan-1 station. The data obtained will reveal information about volcanoes and comets on the Moon and the material brought to Earth by asteroids.
Earlier, we talked about how SpaceX’s Russian cosmonaut ship would go to the ISS and shared a selection of interesting movies about space. If you’re wondering if you can survive in space, take our quiz.
