No photographer, stylist or make-up artist participated in its conception: not even Lisa Opie, the model represented, never posed for this image.
Will AI help fight unrealistic beauty standards in magazines?
The magazine made no secret of the fact that its cover was the product of artificial intelligence: on Instagram, the former Miss said “honoured to be the first model to have a fully AI-generated image on a magazine cover”.
Indeed, Lisa Opie is at the origin of this initiative, validated by the management of the magazine. After stumbling upon the Instagram account “ai_fashion_photos”, which generates images of models with artificial intelligence, Lisa Opie requested that her portrait be created using this technology. As reported by New York PostFran H, the person behind the Instagram account, worked on a dozen photos of the model and produced around fifty images, of which the cover was judged the best.
Photos of Lisa Opie adorn the pages of the magazine. Even if they are much retouchedand that the mannequin is wearing a afro wig (her real hair is straight), these photos make it even more amazing the chilling strangeness of the cover imagewho is much more like a video game character than a human.
Despite Lisa Opie’s enthusiasm for this pick, it’s worth asking whether AI isn’t the best way to extend it much longer. the game of dehumanizing, unattainable and complex canons of beauty in the fashion world.
