No, it is not a joke. Multi-billionaire Amazon creator Jeff Bezos and Leonardo DiCaprio have decided to join forces to protect the Amazon rainforest.
The two men participate in the launch of a $200 million, the challenge to protect our planet. This aims at safeguard the indigenous peoples of the Amazon and to preserve its fauna and flora over the next four years.
All this while ensuring zero deforestation, safeguarding 58 million hectares of non-designated public land in the Amazon, strengthening the management of existing protected areas and protecting indigenous peoples.
71.54 million tons of CO2 released by Amazon in 2021
If in addition to his acting career, Leonardo DiCaprio is also known for his commitment to ecology, Jeff Bezos has discovered the green conscience more recently, despite all his private jet travel.
In July 2021, cowboy hat on, the billionaire offered himself 10 minute space sightseeing flight (yes, ten minutes), to “measure the fragility of the earth,” he wrote Numerama. The following December, he donated $433 million to organizations fighting climate change.
Even if the cause is noble, we would have liked this awareness to be present in his own company as well. Since, not counting the deplorable working conditions of the employees, its carbon footprint explodes, the company having emitted the equivalent of 71.54 million tons of CO2 in 2021. Just that.
Therefore, let’s hope that the next green bailout led by Jeff Bezos will be for Amazon.
