Even before its worldwide release, Greta Gerwig’s highly anticipated film was banned in Vietnam, due to a diplomatic dispute with China. “Barbie” is not the first film to be censored for this reason in the country.

At least one country he will not see Barbie. Vietnam has decided to ban the long-awaited feature film by Greta Gervig, which was to be released locally on July 21st. And this, for diplomatic reasons, reported theFrench media agency.

Vietnamese authorities believe that one of the film’s scenes conveys a controversial point of view on the partition of the South China Sea, to the detriment of Vietnam.

“The National Film Rating and Classification Council saw the film and made the decision to ban its showing in Vietnam due to a nine-point line violation”said the director of the Vietnamese film department, Vi Kien to the news site Dan Tri.

A decades-long diplomatic conflict

Because the scene in question shows a map with a specific geographical delimitation of China, called “the nine-point line”. This demarcation has been inscribed on Chinese maps since 1947. For Beijing, it delimits the Asian giant’s maritime exclusive economic zone – which Vietnam disputes, it reports International mail.

While in 2018, a scene from the American romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians one scene was cut in the country, as it featured a branded bag with a map showing the disputed islands in the South China Sea under Beijing’s control.
