According to a study by Public Health France, the French slept less and less every night. On average, the time spent in bed would therefore be estimated at 6:42 in 2017, compared to 7:09 in 2010. If this difference in pace seems small, beware, over 50 years we have lost between 1h and 1h30 of sleep per nightalways according to the barometer of Public Health France.
Personal and professional annoyances, worries about the climate, excessive screen consumption… There are many reasons for our sleep debt. But how to reduce the time to fall asleep to make the most of your night? On social media there is more and more talk of a method called brain tapping, e would embody the ideal drive to find sleep faster.
The brain tapping method: a way to relax the brain
Brain tapping, or brain tapping in French, was created by a professional musician and assistant professor at Saint Francis University. This method is entirely based on rhythm as the teacher was inspired by a drum exercise, practiced with his students as a warm-up.
The latter involves sitting comfortably, performing small synchronized pats on the legs at a moderate pace before slowing down the pace.
This method is based on a phenomenon well known to scientists called “frequency following response”. It simply defines the brain’s response to repetitive and rhythmic stimulation. This calm and linear rhythm will capture his attention. It allows him to gradually refocus and settle on it before calming down and allowing him to fall asleep. This “rate monitoring response” is then consciously triggered.

The step by step method
The Brain Tapping method is quite simple and accessible to everyone. To adopt it, just follow a few steps:
- Sit comfortably or lie down and place your hands on your knees.
- Start drumming your knees with your hands, alternating your right and left hand every second.
- When the rhythm begins to be well established and mastered, you can close your eyes.
- Calm your breath by inhaling for a count of 4 and exhaling for a count of 4.
- Gently slow down the pace of tapping.
- Relax. At this point, you should feel your eyes become heavy and your brain calm down. Slowly but surely, you will fall asleep. Good night !
