“I am not like the other girls”
The concept of “pick me girl”literally “choose me” refers to women who claim to be more natural, less painful, stronger, smarter than “other girls”.
This concept refers to a straight cis woman looking validation of men by insinuating that she is not like other women.
Concretely, being a “choose me” consists of validating the stereotypes associated with female gender norms, for denigrate.
It was originally a term used by the African-American Twitter community to refer to misogynistic women who valued being a traditional wife, and it was when white users picked up on the word that its meaning changed, as this video well explains.

How pop culture elevates the “pick me” as a positive role model
Both in the cinema and in Bad girl 2In Twilight, fast and furious OR Sierra Burgess is a loser) or in music (like when Taylor Swift gushingly sings that her rival wears “miniskirts” when she’s wearing T-shirts in You belong me), pop culture shocks us with representations that set “pick me girls” as a positive role model.

No wonder: the patriarchy it is never stronger than when women are divided.
Indeed, the “choose me” is the embodiment of internalized misogyny. The concept is threefold sexist:
- He essentializes womenas if being a woman was born boring
- Create and feed hatred, rivalry between womencompletely the opposite of feminist sorority.
- Finally, it reduces women’s existence to men’s validation. As if all their actions and choices had the sole purpose of distinguishing themselves from their “competitors”.
Also, we forget it too often, but it’s not just women who can choose me. The “pick me boy”, we also know him very well: he is the boy with the inclinations incel who repeats that “women prefer assholes” who doesn’t understand why he’s single when he’s “too cute”, and who will constantly belittle himself to manipulate you and get your sympathy.
