Superhero movies are ‘too many, lazy and all look the same’ according to Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn

Are you saturated with (bad) superhero movies? You are not alone.

Too many superhero movies?

If the genre is as joyful as any other, it seems to cross over a quality crisis. Movies are beautiful chain and occupy the cinemas from week to week, they are not necessarily good.

This is especially evidenced by the box office failures of Shazam 2 or more recently from The flash. Despite its $220 million budget, the film has made just $64 million so far, which is more than a worrying figure.

For James Gunn, the director of the trilogy Guardians of the Galaxy, there are two big reasons why so many bad superhero movies are made. To the microphones of the podcast Inside youJames Gunn explained:

“Yes, I think there are too many superhero movies […] We won’t pull any strings at DC and will be very careful with what we release to make every movie the best it can be.

For the director, the problem lies not only in the overproduction of superhero films. If the genre struggles to convince, it’s because the quality requirement it doesn’t seem to be the focus of the filmmakers’ work. For James Gunn, superhero movies suffer laziness studios, writers and directors:

And I think what’s happened is people have become really very lazy about superhero stories. I’m at a point where they make movies just because the heroes exist without asking what makes them their essence and differentiates them from other stories […] The movies all look the same now. »

We better understand why Marvel hit hard Spider-Man: Inside the Spider-Verse AND Through the Spider-Verse. Animated films quickly found their audience as they clashed, at least visually. Similarly, on the DC side, we can cite the case of Batman From Matt Reevesreleased in 2022. Due to his original scene choices and its pace less frantic than most superhero films, the film had won the favor of the public, starting with ours!
