Climate emergency: two words that are not opaque and yet seem to confuse our leaders. President Emmanuel Macron demonstrated this well on 11 May, inviting the European Union to do so break in environmental standards. A request supported by the Belgian premier, who deemed it appropriate not to do so overload the boat » in terms of environmental standards. Faced with a warming planet, there are of course only politicians who can afford to remain cautious.
The European Commission steps forward
The number 2 of the European Commission, Frans Timmermans, does not like these requests, who made it known on Friday 2 June 2023 during the Jacques Delors conference in Paris: “ We don’t have the luxury of breaks, neither in climate policy nor in the protection of our biodiversity », he retorted, in reaction to Emmanuel Macron’s above-ground proposal on the Green Pact. It doesn’t matter if the ice floes melt, the French president doesn’t intend to get wet: “Let’s apply and go all the way [du Pacte vert de la Commission européenne, ndlr] », « but let’s not add anything else ». After all, Europe is ahead of other world powers, he argued, so what’s the point of taking your spleen to court?
Obviously his words, combined with those of the Belgian prime minister, caused an uproar: “ The climate crisis is accelerating recalled Frans Timmermans. “ 60%, even more, of European land is in bad condition, we are losing our bees, we are creating droughts which will prevent agricultural production over large areas”.
Biodiversity at the center of the debates
For several weeks, strong debates have raged around the Nature Restoration Act, the central text of the Green Deal. This provides for the restoration of 20% of natural areas in the European Union by 2030, through a list of objectives deemed ” binding by many Member States and MEPs. The source of their reluctance? The potential impact this legislation could have on agricultural production. Far from worrying about ecosystems already (very) weakened by man’s action, the EPP parliamentary group (majority and right-wing), has also called for a moratorium on a law text providing for a reduction in the use of pesticides. Proof that profit and profitability are much more understandable concepts than the climate emergency.
Nevertheless, “Without nature protection, the Green Deal will fail because so much of the measures we have decided on depend on nature’s ability to sequester carbon. Dead earth does not capture carbon.hammered Mr. Timmermans. “Without nature there is no way to protect Europe and the world from the climate crisis”. On good terms.
