It was in first place for women’s films at the Cannes Film Festival that we were eager to discover. On Saturday 27 May the jury finally agreed with us, consecrating the work of Justine Triet by giving her the highest award at the 76th edition of the Festival. It happens so and the French Julia Ducournaubecoming the third woman in the history of cinema to win the Palme d’Or in history.
Engaged since its beginnings as a director
This is one of the most gratifying news of this edition of the Cannes Film Festival. At 44 and after just four films, Justine Triet confirmed her status as an exciting director by winning the Palme d’Or.
After two years of studies at the Beaux-Arts, Justine Triet turned to cinema, signing the first works with a strong dimension social and very ingrained news. After several documentaries, he directed The battle of Solferinoa film that we highly recommend. Directed by Lætitia Dosch and Vincent Macaigne, the film follows the adventures of a journalist during the presidential campaign between Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande. Noted and critically acclaimed, The battle of Solferino was in the running to win the César for best picture.
Feminist
Justine Triet’s cinema meets social and feminist engagement. In 2016, the director directed her comedy-drama Victoria, starring Virginie Efira and Vincent Lacoste. The film tells the story of an emotionally disturbed criminal lawyer who teams up with a former drug dealer. In addition to the success of the audience, the film was nominated five times at the César in 2017particularly in the categories of best film and best actress.

In 2019, Justine Triet once again shows her taste for portraits of women and finds Virginie Efira inside Sybil. Alongside Adèle Exarchopoulos, Niels Schneider, Laure Calamy, Gaspard Ulliel and Sandra Hüller, Virginie Efira plays a writer turned psychoanalyst. The film was selected in competition at Cannes.
Sandra Hüller will be the protagonistAnatomy of a fall, his latest feature film, awarded the Palme d’Or. Justine Triet co-wrote the film with her husband, director Arthur Harari, to whom we owe the sublime Black Diamond AND Onoda (which we also highly recommend).

Anatomy of a fall follows a family recently residing in the mountains away from everything. When the father is found dead, suspicion falls on his wife. A year later, Daniel, their 11-year-old visually impaired son, will participate in his mother’s trial, which the synopsis presents as a “true dissection of the couple”.
Without a doubt, if you are looking for brilliant French directors: check out Justine Triet’s filmography.
