The conclusion is clear: Netflix is less and less Freddo. This Tuesday, May 23, French subscribers received an email from the platform explaining to them: “Your Netflix account is for you and the people who live with you, i.e. your family”.
The streaming giant has thus announced that the restrictions concern the end of free account sharing with Netflix it will be now applied in France.
Your free account sharing has ended
Gone are the days where you could share your Netflix IDs with one, two, or five of your loved ones who don’t live with you. On Tuesday, January 31, the platform made public the details of its new rules, according to which an account can only be shared within the same household.
“Anyone in your household, i.e. those who live with you and therefore share your primary address, can use your Netflix account” announced the platform in an official press release.
As announced, this measure has just entered into force. Now it is necessary pay 5.99 euros more on the price of your subscription to share your account away from home. The holders of the Standard formula can add an additional subscriberwhile the formula Prize allows you to share your account with two people.

What are the risks in trying to share your account for free?
To enforce its new regulations, Netflix does not hesitate to use drastic measures. The giant announced: ” Devices that identify themselves on Netflix without being associated with your primary address may be blocked. »
To avoid losing access to your account, you will need to do this connect to your home Wi-Fi network and look at least content every 31 days. Netflix also reserves the right to geolocate each connection by its IP address to detect fraud.
Likewise, the platform will have the right to interfere with your vacation. To continue using the service on the move, you will need to request a temporary code whose validity will not exceed… seven consecutive days. However, Netflix claims that it does not collect GPS data on its users, but instead references it the IP address of the WiFi box OR account activity to verify that it is a reliable device.
If Netflix detects activity from an account located outside the household, it will notify the account holder with an invitation to pay 5.99 euros per month or to offer the person to take out a personal subscription. In all cases, Netflix will not have the right to automatically charge you for this amount.
A wave of layoffs already observed in Spain
Behind his drastic measures is obviously an earnings pursuit, Netflix estimating the number of families at over 100 million use of the platform thanks to the sharing of identifiers. Asked by AFP extensionGreg Peters, the new co-CEO of the platform, said that this measure ” it won’t be a universally popular decision ».
Indeed in Spain, where these measures have been active since April, they are more than a million users who have unsubscribed. However, ending account sharing seems to be a priority to increase its profits.
