Victims and perpetrators

After the first episodes of exposure, Class of ’07 quickly find their identity and explores themes related to the adolescent experience in a tragicomic key. Faced with the extraordinary situation they find themselves in, the girls initially give in to alleviate and recreate the toxic patterns of the past.

Driven to assume the role of leader, Saskia resumes her habits of bossy. He sets up an organization modeled on high school cliques, with loved ones and black sheep. Drive away the traumas, they come back at a gallop!

The series alternates between the post-apocalyptic present and flashbacks since high school. Particularly traumatized, Genevieve sees memories of her resurface: the way Saskia harassed her to prevent her from going to the bathroom, the cruel nicknames that remain with her … And she’s not the only one about her.

The series, however, carries nuance in his reflection on the dynamics of power. The group finds its edge in demonizing Saskia, who has to make all the big decisions and buckles under the weight of stress. At the end of an impromptu anthology trial, we learn that her own adolescence was not rosy. Saskia came under the influence of a teacher who used to seduce underage boys in high school. Nobody helped her.

Saskia was victim and perpetrator. A statement that echoes that of buffy, a cult series about the vertigo of adolescence. In a Season 3 episode, Buffy explains to Jonathan, a depressed teenager:

Every person here ignores your pain because they are too concerned about their own. The beautiful ones, the popular ones… the ones that harass you. Everyone. If you could feel what they’re feeling: loneliness, confusion… They seem serene. This is not the case. Their thoughts are deafening. »

The deafening thoughts of former teenage girls of Class of ’07 they are a bit ours.

At the center of Class of ’07, the subject of mental health is treated seriouslywhich does not exclude a good deal of absurd humor. Saskia confides in a mop/psychologist she has decked out in a pair of glasses. Suffering from chronic depression, Amelia throws an “end of the world” party or chases a opossum. Tegan and Megan drown in narcotics and alcohol. This is by facing their addictions and reflecting on what triggers them, they will find some serenity. And for that, nothing like the fraternity.

Between two scenes of gleefully dirty humor (vomiting, cannibalism, constipation!), the series delves into the intricacies of female friendships through multiple relationships. Zoe and Amelia must lay the cards on the table to rebuild a bond that has been strained for years. Old resentments resurface: the egocentrism of the impressionable Zoe, the incommunicability of Amelia, who has experienced a family drama that she preferred to keep silent … These two spend a good part of the season telling each other truths that hurt. Despite its apocalyptic premise, Class of ’07 it’s a decidedly optimistic series. Like a garden that has been abandoned for too long, this friendship needs to be nurtured to flourish again.

In the context of our patriarchal society, female friendship carries within it a charge of unfolding emancipation, without falling into the other world, throughout the series. And it’s fun. The different friendly dynamics end up forming a parish collective ready to overcome the trials of this new post-apocalyptic world together.

The season finalewho sees a gang of Boys drunk and dirty in front of our girls sharpening their knives, announces a sequel (which has yet to be formalized by Amazon Prime) more and more ferocious and crazy!
