EXCLUSIVE: Asia-focused production, financing and distribution organization EST Studios has acquired international distribution rights for its selection of Cannes series stream current of a riverproduced by Canadian Fae Pictures.
The English series created by Christopher Yip will appear in the Canneseries Short Form Competition on MipTV.
The series follows the struggles of a Chinese-Canadian immigrant family who dreams of owning land and running a laundry in a small rural town in Alberta, Canada. When a crazy blizzard binds the dysfunctional family together, they are forced to confront the events of a decade ago that tore them all apart.
The ensemble cast includes veteran Chinese-Canadian actors Jane Luk and Simon Sinn; rising stars Liam Ma and Danielle Ayow; Canadian television actor Jinny Wong; Hong Kong-born Canadian actor Raymond Chan and newcomers Dana Liu and Adrian So.
The series also features appearances by local actors Wesley French (Tribal) and Colton Clause (Three Pines), as well as Brett Houghton (Zero Chill) and Benjamin Sutherland (The Kings Of Napa).
Produced by Fae Pictures’ Shant Joshi (Framing Agnes), Lindsay Blair Goeldner, Abdul Malik and Lauren Saarimaki, the series is supported by the Independent Production Fund, Bell Fund, Ontario Creates and Canadian broadcaster Super Channel.
The international sales deal was brokered by Joshi and Tenten Wei and Juefang Zhang of EST Studios. EST Studios will present the six-part short series, which will also be presented as a feature film, to buyers at next month’s upcoming Cannes Marché du Film.

Fae Pictures has also produced horror films in Pakistani Urdu language, In flameswhich was selected for Directors Fortnight at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
EST Studios was founded by Jaeson Ma and Eric Tu and is also handling the international sales of the Sundance 2022 selection Maikawhich premiered in Sundance’s Kids section, and Every day at Kaimuki. It also produced K pops!directed by rapper Anderson .Paak and documentary Hidden letterswhich appeared at Tribeca in 2022.
