John Regan dies: Bassist for Peter Frampton, Rolling Stones, Ace Frehley turns 71

John Regan, a master bassist whose resume included stints with Peter Frampton, Ace Frehley, Billy Idol, the Rolling Stones and David Bowie, died on Friday at the age of 71 in upstate New York. No reason was given.

Wife Cathy Merring-Regan issued a statement that was shared on Facebook by a family friend.

“It is with the greatest sadness and sorrow that I have to inform you all that John passed away this afternoon,” the statement read. “So many people left messages of love and condolences on his phone. I’m trying to figure out how to post to one of his posts [Facebook] Pages. I appreciate all your thoughts and prayers. One of his favorite quotes was: “You can take anything you give away. From reading your posts I know he has given a lot and received so much love. He died suddenly, but it was his wish.”

Peter Frampton posted a greeting in a series of tweets.

“If so, there may only be a handful of people who come into your world and really make a difference in your life. I lost one of my best friends. He definitely enriched my life because he was a person and a great player. John Regan was the best of us,” Frampton wrote.

Apart from Frampton, Regan played with Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley from 1984 to 1990, recording Frehley’s Comet (1987); “Second Sighting” (1988); and “Trouble Walking” (1989).

He also worked with David Bowie and Mick Jagger on the 1985 single “Dancing in the Street” and the following year with the Rolling Stones on “Winning Ugly”.

In 2014, Regan co-founded the band Four by Fate, who released their debut album Relentless two years later.

Survivors include his wife Cathy, children Christopher and Jeness, and grandchildren.
