Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky says “working in the office now is a relic of the past”

In The Time Leadership Report interview In a report released this week, Airbnb CEO Brian Cesky called office work an “anachronistic form” that “dates back to pre-digital times.”

His comments are supported by his own company. Airbnb announced earlier this week that its employees can work remotely forever without payment penalties imposed by other companies.

Cesky said Airbnb had the most productive two-year period before its staff went the distance, saying the talent pool available for hiring was expanded with less restrictive rules for remote working.

“I think the office as we know it is finished,” he told Time. “We cannot keep 2019 more than 1950. We have to move forward.”

“If there was no office, I want to ask, would we have invented it? And if we were to invent, why should it be invented? Obviously, people will continue to go to hospitals and work, people will continue to go to work in bars – these spaces make a lot of sense. But I think for those whose work is on a laptop, the question is, what does the office do?

Cesky said his company’s “careers” page got a big boost when it announced a new distance policy.

The CEO himself said he spends his time between Airbnb’s various locations in the United States.

Cesky said an office situation would be needed under different scenarios.

“People will continue to go to the offices, but it will be for other purposes, for cooperation,” he said.

He also said the hybrid model had three days in the office and two remote control failures, something tech companies Apple and Google are trying to do.

Airbnb meets its employees in person for a quarter of the week.

“My prediction is that three days a week is two days a week, and two days a week is one day a week, and very soon you are really in a hybrid world, if you are mainly in a distant world.” she said. “People don’t realize that two or three days a week isn’t super sustainable. People will notice, “Well, let’s be more determined to bring people together. And be together in a week or two. “
