Agatha Christie’s Poirot, Miss Marple Classic mysteries rewritten for modern sensibilities

Agatha Christie is the latest best-selling author to receive the rewrite treatment for 2023 readers, according to a British newspaper.

Christie, the world’s best-selling novelist, created the enduringly popular detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, and the Daily Telegraph reports that new editions of both series have had original passages altered or removed by publisher Harper Collins.

The Telegraph states that digital versions of new editions of the books written between 1920 and 1976 (the year Christie died) contain text that “describes, insults or references ethnicity, especially for characters outside of Christie’s protagonists.” of the United Kingdom ‘ was withdrawn.

For example in the book Death on the Nile – Published in 1937 and recently reimagined for the big screen by Kenneth Branagh – References to “Nubian people” have been removed, as have several references to physiques of non-British characters. The word “local” replaces “indigenous”

A sentence in Christie’s debut novel The mysterious affair at Styles in which Poirot comments that a character is “a Jew” has disappeared. And Christie’s narration and portions of dialogue spoken by unlikable characters were also cut, according to the newspaper.

These changes come after a similar recent treatment of books by Roald Dahl and Ian Fleming who created James Bond.

When publisher Puffin announced in February that it would remove offensive language from Dahl’s children’s books by 2023, the backlash was such that the publisher confirmed it would release two versions – one edited and one unchanged.
