Christina Applegate took to Twitter last night to express her disgust at conservative commentator Candice Owens’ comments about her on Tuesday Daily caller Show in which Owens questions a promotion for Skims’ Adaptive Scoop Bralette featuring a woman in a wheelchair.
Applegate, who announced in 2021 that she has multiple sclerosis, has opened up publicly about her struggle with the condition. MS can cause vision loss, pain, fatigue and reduced coordination, and Applegate has appeared on occasions with a cane while walking the red carpet.
“Yes, let’s tweet,” the actress wrote last night. “But when I woke up, I saw the most terrible thing. This Candace person makes comments about companies that see that we need help. It’s fucking gross. Thank you Skims and Tommy and Guide Beauty and @neowalksticks for seeing us. For you #youmustknowbetter”
Yes, tweet later. But woke up to see the scariest thing. This Candace person makes comments about companies that see that we need help. It’s damn dirty. I want to thank Skims and Tommy and Guide Beauty and @neowalksticks to see https://t.co/lFiHFuYGY2 #You ought to know better

Comments the actress was referring to include the following Owens made on her show Tuesday about a photo of a model in a wheelchair with skims:
I don’t really understand how far we are going with this inclusion thing. I really don’t get it. I do not know. If I’m wrong again, teach me today. I just want to be educated in the comments. Why did they do that? I don’t know, I don’t know why this has to happen. I’m just sick of this all inclusive thing. It seems ridiculous.
Look, I think people in wheelchairs should buy bras too, should buy underwear too… I didn’t know we should see it on our faces. Little did I know that because we as a society can’t fathom our ridiculousness, we now have to look out for campaigns where women in wheelchairs now wear bras and underwear.

Applegate followed up her first tweet with a personal example of why such ads – and the clothes they promote – are sorely needed.
“I’m going to try to sleep but my anger is keeping me awake,” the Emmy winner wrote. “Candace Owens, if you’ve seen pictures of me, do you know how damn hard it was to get dressed? A team needs to help me!!! That’s why I’m happy about barrier-free clothing for me and my community. hope you wake up”

Applegate struck a more conciliatory tone a few minutes later at 2:18 a.m. with a final tweet:
“I thought my last tweet was enough. But then my heart said otherwise. no anger If candace wants to call me to explain my disability. I will not come with anger. I come with love Because she needs to hear it. I am praying for her tonight. Your”

Owens responded to that recent tweet in the comments section this morning that she is a “huge fan” of Applegate and would welcome a conversation with you. DMs are open.”
She then tried to explain that the underwear segment was a staple of her show and that she “actually didn’t know that this particular ad featured special technology for people with disabilities, which was a real mistake.”
“I think what you may have missed, Christina, is that reporting on absurd DEI initiatives is a recurring rhythm on my show. We actually didn’t know that this particular ad contained special technology for people with disabilities, which was a real mistake.”
The conservative pundit went on to say that she thinks the Skims promotion is “another nonsensical DEI initiative of ‘representational matters’ which I think is very condescending to the people it purports to represent… It was that we didn’t do it.” and we were just wrong. “
Owens ended by saying, “We do a show 5 days a week. There’s no way we’re not going to make an honest mistake at some point. If you feel personally attacked by this mistake, I apologize. We just didn’t know (it wasn’t in the ad) that the underwear was made for people with disabilities.”
