EXCLUSIVE: Audible is collaborating with singer-songwriter and actress Leigh-Anne Pinnock on an adaptation of The little mermaid.
Based on the classic story by Hans Christian Andersen, the Audible version was adapted by lyricist Dina Gregory with Pinnock as the narrator.
Gregory brought some of Pinnock’s own experiences into the story, and the former Little Mix member enlisted singers Anaiis, Kersha Bailey, Sairah Rowe and Nadine Samuels to provide original vocals. The project is produced by String and Tins.
Anderson’s story follows a young mermaid who makes a deal with a sea witch to trade her beautiful voice for human bones so she can explore the world above water and impress a prince.
The series will be available on March 23, two months before Disney relaunches the classic story.
Leigh Anne Pinnock said: “The little mermaid is one of the most famous fairy tales and has so many fans of all ages. I was personally drawn to this adaptation of Dina because I connected to so many themes within the storyline. My narrative was inspired by my own culture and experience, and I wanted my community to be represented in this version of the classic tale. I hope listeners have as much fun telling it as I enjoyed telling it!”
Dina Gregory added: “In the popular imagination The little mermaid turned into a happy ending fairy tale despite the dark ending of the original story. Never destined to marry the prince, this voiceless misfit is abandoned by a world that sees her as “different.” With Leigh-Anne Pinnock commenting on this edit, I saw an opportunity to reclaim both Andersen’s vision and the Little Mermaid’s voice. As a biracial writer, I drew inspiration from Leigh-Anne’s advocacy. Against all odds, she rose to pop stardom—only to discover an industry and fans often hostile to women of color. Undeterred, she used her experience to speak out against racism. Who better to voice a mermaid who, like Leigh-Anne, follows a dream and survives trials to become stronger.
