BBC crisis: UK PM sails Lineker Row as flagship sports show airs without host, commentary, music…

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak found his meeting with French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron completely overshadowed by the British media at the weekend. On Saturday night, Sunak’s office released a statement from the prime minister that said:

“Gary Lineker was a great footballer and a talented presenter. I hope the current situation between Gary Lineker and the BBC can be resolved in time, but that is rightfully their business, not the government’s.”

It comes after BBC boss Tim Davie apologized to the public for a weekend in which sports coverage on TV and radio was suspended.

The BBC’s top sports program last night match of the day was broadcast without a presenter, pundits, match commentary, or even the iconic theme song, and was reduced to a 20-minute reel of the day’s matches.

Sunday sports programming is expected to be similarly affected on both television and radio.

The channel’s chief executive said in an interview with BBC News that he was working hard to resolve the situation, as dozens of presenters, commentators and pundits would have to resign from their broadcasting duties and several programs would have to be pulled from the programme. . They performed in support of Gary Lineker – the host of match of the day – who was suspended after writing a tweet criticizing the government’s immigration policy.

And Davie added:

“For me, success means getting Gary back on the air and together we bring the public that world-class sports coverage that, as I said, we were unfortunately unable to deliver today.”

Davie denied the government had pressured him to suspend Lineker, adding his main aim remained to protect the BBC’s unique selling point, impartiality, across the board.
