MadPrime Europe special: abortion, contraception, sex education… where are we?

For several years, all over the world, women’s sexual and reproductive rights have been under threat. In France, the issue of constitutionalizing abortion is under discussion, when several European countries have already strengthened supervision, making access to it more complicated when it is not simply prohibited. Where are we really at and what are the prospects? See you at 19:00 on our Twitch channel to talk about it.

After the shock repeal of Roe vs. Wade in the United States, many observers wondered about the repercussions of such a decision in Europe: the knockback is near? In Europe, while most countries authorize the use of abortion, some have gradually regulated it over several years, so much so that it is, in fact, almost banned, as happens in Poland or Hungary. .

The right to abortion is part of “sexual and reproductive rights”, defined by WHO in 2006 as follows: ” The concept of sexual and reproductive health […] covers not only family planning but also natal and newborn health, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV, abortion management and infertility treatment without forgetting the freedom to choose one’s sexuality or sexual information and education.

A concept that obliges some European states, many of which unfortunately do not resume uniformly: according to the note Sex education in the European Union: an overview (2020), providing sex education to children and young people is, for example, compulsory in nineteen EU Member States and optional in eight other States. However, with the exception of Finland, Estonia and Sweden, where sexuality education is provided during initial training, the possibilities for teacher training are limited. In some Member States, sex education may be formally required, but rarely offered in practice, due to societal opposition.

Under these conditions, what is really the situation of sexual and reproductive rights in Europe? Is the right to abortion under threat? What about access to contraception? What place does sex education have in raising awareness among young people, in the era of fake news that abounds on the web and on social networks?

To talk about it, Elisa Covo and Marie-Stéphanie Servos receive Eulalie Deneuville-Cesbron, jurist, specialist in women’s reproductive rights at European level and Lola Schulmann, advocacy manager for women’s rights and gender minorities at Amnesty International France.
