The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya said in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon that an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work.
In the statement, the family said they were “deeply concerned” about the film’s preliminary script, which they said contained “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresented Anna’s life, work and family.
The film, previously titled mother Russiantells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from a local print journalist to a fighter on the Chechen battlefields, exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including poisoning, Anna refused to stop covering the war in Chechnya. She was eventually killed in the elevator at her apartment building, and it remains unclear who paid for the hit-and-run.
BAFTA nominee Maxine Peake (The village) plays Anna in the biopic. Additional cast members include Ciaran Hinds (Belfast), Jason Isaacs (Stalin’s death), Harry Lawtey (Industry), Ellie Bamber (pasture) and Naomi Battrick (The postcard murders). BAFTA winner James Strong (Broad church) is directed from a screenplay by Eric Poppen.
Good Films Collective teamed up with Burbank-based Rolling Pictures to produce the film, directed by producers Miriam Segal and Mark Maxey. Executive producers are Rick Crumly and Stefanie Scott. The film was shot on location in Latvia and co-produced by Forma Pro Films. Film Bridge International is handling the sale and pitched the project to buyers at the last EFM.
The statement, released by Anna’s ex-husband Alexander Politkovsky and their two children, Vera and Ilya, added that the family did not contribute to the production and did not give the producers permission to use their names in the film.
“While no comment can be made on the content of an ultimately released version, the family is deeply concerned that the preliminary script, as released, is essentially fictitious and contains significant inaccuracies regarding Anna and her family, a misrepresentation of her character, in a sense, her punishment,” the statement read.
Deadline has reached out to producers for comment.
