The winners were announced at the 73rd Berlin Film Festival On the Adamante by Nicolas Philibert, which was awarded the prestigious Golden Bear for best film in the festival’s international competition. The film tells the story of a unique daycare center in the heart of Paris that takes in adults with mental disorders and offers the kind of care that grounds them in time and space and helps them recover or give up.
Introducing the film, judge Kristen Stewart said the picture was “masterfully crafted” and “a cinematic testament to the essential need for human expression.”
Other International Competition winners include Philippe Garrel, who won the Silver Bear for Best Director for his latest film The Great Wagon (The Plow). Garrel dedicated the award to the late filmmaker Jean-Luc Godard. Berlin launched awards for gender-neutral acting in 2021, and this year’s Silver Bear winner for best actress went to child actress Sofía Ortero for her debut in 20,000 species of bees, and Thea Ehrlich received the Silver Bear for Best Supporting Role Until the end of the night.
German filmmaker Angela Schanelec won the Silver Bear for Best Screenplay Music and French cinematographer Hélène Louvart won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for her work in disco boy by Giacomo Abbruzzese.
Outside the main competition, the festival’s Ecumenical Jury awarded the main competition prize to Lila Avilés totemLeah Fehner Wise Femmes (midwives) won the Panorama prize and that of Mehran Tamadon Jaii keh khoda nist (Where God is not) at the top of the forum. The jury’s special mention was Sur l’Adamant (On the Adamant) by Nicolas Philibert.
The ceremony was a relatively uncomplicated affair as the festival jury and guests arrived on the red carpet as the Berlin skies opened up and the rain began to pour. Elsewhere, early Saturday morning, sir by Apolline Traoré was named the winner of the Panorama Audience Award for Best Film, while Kokomo town by D. Smith won the audience award in the Panorama Documentary category.
This year the festival opened with Rebecca Miller’s latest film she came to mewith Peter Dinklage, Marisa Tomei, Joanna Kulig, Brian d’Arcy James and Anne Hathaway.
Billed as an exploration of “love in all its forms,” the film is set in New York and follows composer Steven Lauddem (Dinklage) as he finds himself creatively blocked and unable to compose the score for his big comeback. to complete – to the opera. At the behest of his wife Patricia (Anne Hathaway), his former therapist, he begins a search for inspiration. What he discovers, the summary says, is much more than he expected or imagined.
The film was shown out of competition as a special gala in the Berlinale Palast.
The actress Kristen Stewart headed the jury of the international competition. She was joined by Iranian-French actress Golshifteh Farahani, German director Valeska Grisebach, Romanian director Radu Jude, American cast and producer Francine Maisler, Spanish director Carla Simón and legendary Hong Kong director and producer Johnnie To.
