Creator and muse, legendary fashion designer and famous actress Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn. Their friendship began in the 1950s, when both began to conquer the world, and lasted 40 years until the death of the actress. Givenchy shuddered: “She was a magician, she inspired love and beauty, and fairies are never lost forever.” And at the end of his life, Hepburn gave him a blue coat with the words: “Wear it especially when you are sad, it will give you strength.” And even 20 years later, she could not hold back tears when talking about him during an interview: “From Geneva to Paris, I cried in the coat he gave me.”
The creative union of Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn was so harmonious and natural that many still associate them with each other. He created dresses for her and wore them with such charm that no one else could.
Today it’s been exactly 93 years since the birth of the legendary actress and Givenchy’s main muse. We decided to dive into history and take a closer look at what the designer has created for Audrey Hepburn.
Dress for the movie “Sabrina”

The story of incredible friendly love began with the movie “Sabrina”. In the early 1950s, Givenchy received a call from Hollywood saying that an actress named Hepburn was coming to choose a dress for a new movie. Of course, the designer decided that the legendary actress of the 40s, Katharine Hepburn, would go to Paris. That’s why she was so surprised when “a slender, big-eyed brunette in tight pants, a white blouse, and flat balls” entered the studio. By the way, Givenchy initially rejected him: “I said I didn’t have time. At that time I was busy working on the collection and didn’t have many assistants.” But the actress decided not to give up and invited him to dinner, after which the fashionista completely changed her mind.
As a result, in “Sabrina” Audrey appeared in several Givenchy dresses. After the release of this film, the popularity of the designer increased significantly, and all customers dreamed of dresses like those of an actress.
Red dress for the movie “Funny Face”

In 1957 Givenchy began work on the iconic red dress for Funny Face. After the final editing, the red ensemble became the main symbol of the picture, although almost the entire scene with Audrey in this image was cut.
Black dress for breakfast at Tiffany’s

If you’re not familiar with Givenchy’s previous work, everyone, without exception, knows about the black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Later, it entered the history of not only fashion, but also cinema. By the way, the designer created another cropped version (it was somewhat similar to Chanel’s little black dress), but did not cause such a stir as the original image with long gloves and a pearl necklace.
Dress designed for the Oscars

In 1954, Audrey Hepburn won an Oscar at Givenchy for her performance in Roman Holiday. It was a replica of the outfit that Audrey appeared in in the final scenes of the movie. The designer changed the top and line of the bodice, making it more feminine. It was held in the Hepburn family for a long time and was auctioned off by Kerry Taylor in 2011 and sold for $131,000.
wedding mini

In 1969, Audrey Hepburn married psychiatrist Andrea Dotti. Of course, it was Hubert de Givenchy who created the outfit for such a solemn event. It was a petite pink high-neck A-line dress that perfectly accentuated the actress’ long neck. She completed her minimalist look with a scarf in the same color.
