While we may never have seen it in action ourselves, the story of Carmen it is almost part of the collective imagination. Created by Georges Bizet in 1875, the opera recounts the romantic encounter between the gypsy Carmen and the sergeant Don José, already engaged to another man. The French dancer and choreographer Benjamin Millepied (among other things husband of Natalie Portman and former director of the Paris Opera) rewrites the story to adapt it to the cinema.
The opera Carmen, film version on the Mexican-American border, with Paul Mescal, Melissa Barrera and Rossy de Palma
Carmen (played by Melissa Barrera) becomes a Mexican who wants to cross the border, before being intercepted by an American patrol. An ex-marine, Aidan (played by Paul Mescal, nominated for an Oscar 2023 for his role in after sun and which has made it through in particular thanks to the series Normal people), comes to her aid, and the two hunted lovers then flee to Los Angeles (and meet a character played by Rossy de Palma).
With its gloomy photography dotted with neon colors that can evoke the work of other directors such as Baz Luhrmann or Nicolas Winding Refn, the first teaser already allows us to sense the chemistry between the actors and to see how obviously the film will be full of dance scenes. Accompanying this story of all-consuming passion in rhythm is composer Nicholas Britell (origin of the scores for Succession AND Twelve years a slave) designed the soundtrack for This Carmen of modern times, who smacks of white saviorism and will be released in theaters on June 14, 2023.
