Rachel Keke and Ersilia Soudais: The dress of women in the National Assembly, still full of sexism

Rachel Keke and Ersilia Soudais: The dress of women in the National Assembly, still full of sexism

Ever since Cécile Duflot’s floral dress booed the National Assembly in 2012, have you thought we’ve made progress against sexism? No, as demonstrated in quick succession by the sexist attacks against LFI/NUPES MPs Rachel Keke and Ersilia Soudais.

In case we were not yet horrified enough by the sexist boos against Cécile Dufflot in 2012 or the debates on whether to make the wearing of a suit and tie compulsory in the National Assembly in July 2022, the hemicycle is now agitated around the outfits by Rachel Keke and Ersilia Soudais.

The first, a former housekeeper, publicized among the spokespersons for the maids’ strike at the Ibis Batignolles hotel, which began in 2019, is sadly used to being targeted by sexist and/or racist attacks. On February 14, 2023, the far-right trade unionist Bruno Attal (deputy general secretary of the French police union and police-justice referent of Reconquête, the collective of Eric Zemmour) tweeted to attack the one who has become a NUPES deputy from the 7th constituency constituency of Val-de-Marne. Chevilly-Larue, Fresnes, L’Haÿ-les-roses, Rungis, Thiais:

“MP @KekeRachel dresses western style when received by the Ivory Coast Ambassador to France. And to the African in the National Assembly.
What message does he want to convey? »

What Rachel Keke brilliantly answered, between two demonstrations against the pension reform which will particularly penalize women and precarious jobs:

“No message, you know every morning I have to dress… But if you want a message: that women all over the world can dress however they want, without having to put up with this kind of racist and male chauvinist comments. My body, my choice

Following this Twitter exchange, one would have hoped that this kind of micro-controversy would disappear forever. Hand. Just five days later, it was the turn of another NUPES deputy to be attacked for her dress, Ersilia Soudais, from the 7th district of Seine-et-Marne and new vice-president of the anti-Semitism study group at the National Assembly.

It is the lawyer Alain Jakubowicz, former president of LICRA (International League against Racism and Anti-Semitism), who recently attacked Ersilia Soudais…) from 2010 to 2017, who took the liberty of tweeting on February 19, 2023:

“Winter outfit for a Member of Parliament. We are afraid of summer…”

In addition to the gross misogyny, it is difficult not to read in Alain Jakubowicz’s vile tweet some bitterness for the appointment of Ersilia Soudais to the vice-presidency of the anti-Semitism study group in the National Assembly, on the one hand, and as for her positions against the occupation of Palestine, on the other. LICRA also dissociated itself from Alain Jakubowicz’s claims, reports the Huffington Post. Incidentally note that this tweet constitutes a sexist public slur, punishable by fine and imprisonment.

The young MP has not reacted publicly, which is to her credit, while many brothers and sisters have shown their support, such as Clementine Auten OR Sandrine Rousseau.

In short, while public debates could focus on pension reform, on the alarming drought of groundwater, and therefore on the accelerated ecocide we are experiencing and which threatens the survival of future generations, still too many men prefer to cut women’s clothes. And this, especially if they are young, politically committed and unifying like Rachel Keke or Ersilia Soudais. An emotion that speaks volumes about how threatened they feel?
