“No one on my watch is getting hit tonight,” quips Richard E. Grant in an irreverent BAFTA host monologue

Richard E. Grant, on Steve Martin’s advice, has rocked the Batmobile towards the 2023 BAFTA Film Awards, as he revealed in a video set to kick off his BAFTA monologue tonight. “One prank can ruin your life and career,” Martin warned before offering 1,000 rules (thankfully unpublished) on how to be the perfect awards host. “Don’t wear white,” warned Martin Grant, who was already wearing a white tuxedo. “Start drafting your monologue at least a year in advance”; “Don’t Pick a Fight with Judi Dench”; and “Don’t invest in Helen Mirren’s cryptocurrency, she’s a scam.”

In his monologue, he addressed the guests and said, “Everyone here started with a stroke of luck,” before sharing a story of how Me and Withnail only occurred to him after Daniel Day-Lewis refused. “It was a real sliding door moment because tonight I’m presenting the awards here when Daniel has only acted in two films in the last 10 years.”

In an irreverent speech far less risqué than last year’s Rebel Wilson monologue, Grant took the opportunity to scour the industry for work and read his resume to the audience. Richard E Grant. Active age ranges from 30s to 50s via deepfake. Like all the actors here tonight, I can drive 100%. I want you to know that my favorite movie of the year is the one you made.

Referring to last year’s Will Smith Oscars controversy, Grant said, “I’m doing my best to make sure no one in my care falls unconscious tonight.”
