Nikki Haley is competing with Donald Trump for the Republican nomination

Nikki Haley has announced that she will run for president in 2024.

The former South Carolina governor announced her bid for the Republican nomination for the White House in a video today and is expected to make further comments at a launch event in Charleston.

The announcement pits the 51-year-old Haley against former boss Trump, who has already announced his intention to run for a second term. He lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden and has since been consolidating his base ahead of another campaign.

She was previously his ambassador to the United Nations, but in recent years has built her own career.

“I’m Nikki Haley and I’m running for president,” she says in the video, which was first reported by Axios.

At the beginning of the video, Haley focuses on her political rivals, showing images of Democrat Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez and others, and the New York Times’ 1619 Project, as she says, “Some see our past as proof that the foundations of America was bad. They say the promise of freedoms is just made up. Some think that our ideas are not only wrong, but also racist and evil. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

She then claims that she has “seen evil” and compares the US human rights record to that of China and Iran.

She later called Biden’s presidential record “bottomless” and claimed that “the Washington establishment has failed us time and again,” adding, “It’s time for a new generation of leaders.”

Haley’s announcement video highlighted her background as a native of South Carolina, a key early primary state, where she served as governor from 2011-2017. She was the state’s first female governor. Her parents were immigrants from India, and in her announcement video, Haley spoke about the need to pass leadership to a new generation.

That in itself was a subtle jab at the 76-year-old Trump.

Republicans have lost the popular vote in seven of the last eight presidential elections. That has to change,” says Haley.

She also spoke of taunting China and Russia. “You should know that about me. I don’t hang out with bullies. And when you lean back, it hurts more when you wear heels.”

Trump has already weighed in on Haley’s offer by posting a video on his Truth Social account in which she said she would not run if the former president did. In a recent interview with Hugh Hewitt, Trump told the conservative host, “She called me and she asked me about it and I told her to follow her heart. You know, she’s said countless times, I actually wrote it down, that if our president ran for office, I would never run for office. He was a great president, et cetera, et cetera. She said that several times. But she is a very ambitious human. She just couldn’t stay in her chair. And I said you know what? Nikki, if you want to run, run.

Haley may be the first of Trump’s many challengers, as he believes his support has waned since the midterm elections. A number of high-profile candidates backed by Trump lost their races, while one of his potential opponents, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, won re-election with a landslide victory.
