Colman Domingo Joins Broadway’s “Fat Ham” As Co-Producer, Names James Ijames’ Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Kind Of Theater” Broadway Needs

EXCLUSIVE: Emmy-winning and Tony-nominated Colman Domingo, whose new Netflix series The madness got the green light yesterday, has enough room on his plate for Thick ham.

Domingo has signed on to co-produce the upcoming Broadway production of James Ijames’ Pultizer Prize-winning play Thick ham.

Performances begin Tuesday, March 21 at the American Airlines Theater Thick ham has an official opening night on Wednesday 12 April for a strictly limited engagement of 14 weeks until Sunday 6 August.

The play, which has been called a “comic tragedy,” reinvents Shakespeare’s hamlet by placing it on a grill in the backyard, where Juicy, a queer black Southern student struggling with identity issues, encounters the ghost of his father, who arrives and demands that Juicy avenge his murder, even as Juicy attempts to cycle to break To break through trauma and violence in the service of one’s own liberation.

Thick ham on Broadway is a co-production of Public Theater and National Black Theatre.

“I am delighted to be the co-producer of The National Black Theater and James Ijame’s exciting Public Theater transfer Thick ham It was directed by my dear friend and visionary director Saheem Ali,” Domingo told Deadline. “This is the kind of theater we need on Broadway — bold reinterpretations of stories that feed us all.”

The Broadway transfer of Thick ham Off Broadway Public Theater is the first National Black Theater production on Broadway and only the third play in Broadway’s centuries-long history to be carried by a Black Theatre. The entire Off-Broadway cast is making the move to Broadway.

Domingo is currently starring Fear of the walking dead And euphoria, and finished filming The color purple. He was nominated for a Tony Award for his performance in 2011 The Scottsboro Boys Musical.

Thick ham is produced by Rashad V. Chambers, No Guarantees and Public Theater Productions. Andy Jones and Dylan Pager will serve as executive producers.
