The Disney+ documentary series ‘Marvel Studios: Reunited’ just released its chapter on the making of ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’, which includes images revealing that, before landing the role of Riri Williams in the sequel, Dominique Thorne auditioned to play Shuri. As you all know, the role eventually fell to Letitia Wright, but the casting gave Thorne the opportunity to play another character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, where she will soon star in her own series, ‘Ironheart “.

Thorne’s camera test video moved Marvel fans, especially to see Chadwick Boseman (wearing a cancer shirt at the casting) again. Also, the clip shows the actress’ previous connection to the franchise, who then directly called her to be Riri. Nate Moore, producer of the film, calls Thorne a funny actress, with a great presence and a lot of attitude, revealing that, when it came time to look for Ironheart, she already had it on the agenda: “We remember that audition and when we decided to cast Riri Williams in ‘Wakanda Forever’, she was the first and only one we called”.

According to ComicBook, Thorne says her inspiration and learning to play Riri came from Queen Ramonda: “The most important thing I learned from Queen Ramonda herself, Miss Angela Bassett…was take your time”. He also says that his first contact with film was intense: “My first day on set was the scene I share with her in the throne room, me entering it for the first time. What a first day! A thousand things immediately came to mind, not only about the film and the wonder of all this, but also the size of the set, the film, the blue screens… But the moment they said “action” and we started the scene, it was like coming back to realityto go back to the present moment in which she was so concentrated, so closed in character, there was already Queen Ramonda”.
Next stop: “Heart of Iron”
What has been cataloged as the young successor of Iron Man in UCM has already been immersed for some time in the filming of the new series that Marvel Studios and Disney + are preparing centered on Riri Williams. After crossing Wakanda, Thorne will headline his own solo title, ‘Ironheart’, which is part of Phase 5.
Chinaka Hodge (“The Midnight Club”) serves as showrunner on the project, which also features Alden Ehrenreich, Anthony Ramos and Sacha Baron Cohen, among others. While no date has yet been set for its premiere on Disney+, initially, it is expected by the end of 2023although that may change.
