Wrexham’s FA Cup run ends, meaning no end to Hollywood for owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney

Wrexham, the fledgling fifth-tier Welsh football club owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, lost in the fourth round of the FA Cup on Tuesday, ending an improbable run in one of football’s most iconic club competitions.

The team, one of the oldest professional football clubs, lost 3-1 to Sheffield United in the replay, with the result decided in the last few minutes as it was the first time the two had met. Sheffield, three classes and 72 places above Wrexham in English football, scored twice in extra time on Tuesday to cruise away and reach the last 16.

Neither Reynolds nor McElhenney, who acquired the club for $2.5 million in November 2020, attended the Sheffield game. But both tweeted about their promoted squad after the final whistle.

The Red Dragons are in dire straits this season, having gone unbeaten in their last 22 league and non-league games so far as they suffered their first defeat since October. Its success will surely be documented in FX’s documentaries Welcome to Wrexhamwho had cameras on the pitch during filming of season 2 at Bramall Lane in Sheffield. (The series, which already has 18 episodes from the first season, will air internationally on Disney+.)

Wrexham are now aiming to win the National League, which would mean automatic promotion to the EFL for the first time since 2008. It is currently second overall.

“Let’s win it now [f*cking] League,” McElhenney tweeted today after the loss.
