Ghostly mystery format for the BBC The traitors is the gift that keeps on giving.
While the UK version on BBC One was a huge hit and ratings bonanza, the US premiere just became the most watched show on the newly launched linear BBC Three network.
With 1.2 million consolidated viewers in the past two weeks, the first episode was titled The game is in progress topping the BBC Three charts, according to Barb data by Liam Hamilton.
Regardless, the US version, which aired on Peacock and was acquired by All3 Media International, has also been available in full on BBC iPlayer since early last month.
The American version, hosted by Alan Cumming, differs from the British version in that it combines a series of reality TV icons with non-celebrities. It became Peacock’s most-watched reality series and was yesterday cleared for a second season, along with a reunion special hosted by Andy Cohen for later this month.
The show, set in the Scottish Highlands, takes on 22 candidates – 19 believers and three traitors – where traitors must evade the watchful eyes of their fellow believers while “murdering” each night and avoiding being “locked up” during intense round table sessions. During the day, they compete against each other in challenges to increase the final cash prize.
BBC Three has had mixed results since its relaunch on linear television early last year. Show how RuPaul’s Drag Race United Kingdom And The rap game did well and kept the focus on the channel, but as linear TV ratings continued to decline, many slipped under the radar. BBC Three was only online between 2016 and 2021.
