President Joe Biden told Congress today that he will end the dual state of emergency declared to fight the Covid pandemic, according to multiple sources. There is currently a public health emergency and a national emergency related to the virus, both of which were recently expanded. The declarations will be lifted on May 11, reports The Washington Post, which reclassifies Covid as an endemic threat.
A senior government official told the Post that during the transition period, government agencies and others “can begin the process of smoothing operationalization of the flexibility made possible by the COVID-19 emergency declarations.”
Former President Donald Trump initially declared the pandemic a national emergency in March 2020. Since then, the double emergency calls have been repeatedly extended.
The idea to deal with the emergencies was floated weeks ago when it was last updated.
