Twitter is being sued by the British Crown Estate for unpaid rent at its London headquarters.
The estate filed a lawsuit at the High Court in London last week. Court cases were sent to Twitter.
The complaint of alleged arrears has not been disclosed but relates to Twitter’s Piccadilly office in central London.
The action was taken after The Estate contacted Twitter about unpaid rent at 20 Airstraat and Deadline understands talks between the two will continue.
Twitter could not be reached for comment this morning.
It appears to be the second time Twitter has been sued for unpaid office rent this month, with US affiliates reporting yesterday that a non-payment lawsuit had been filed against the San Francisco headquarters.
The news is the latest twist in the saga of Twitter’s future, which began when the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, reluctantly bought the company for $44 billion last year.
Musk has since focused on cutting costs, cutting staff in half and shifting the focus from spending to revenue-generating initiatives. CNN Business claimed earlier this month that it had stopped paying rent worldwide.
He did not comment on the demand for the estate or in any other way.
The Piccadilly property forms part of The Estate’s portfolio, which is owned by King Charles III and is used to generate profit for the exchequer. It has repaid £3 billion ($3.2 billion) over the past decade. Fifteen percent of the income goes to the monarch’s official duties.
In total, The Estate owns more than 10 million square feet of land in the United Kingdom.
