Guests wait in record-breaking lines for one last ride before Disney World’s Splash Mountain closes for renovations

It was the end of an era at Walt Disney World yesterday when the Florida theme park closed its popular Splash Mountain attraction to work on its replacement, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure. The Orlando-area redevelopment is slated to open in late 2024, but an official date has not yet been set.

Throngs of fans gathered at Walt Disney World yesterday before Splash Mountain even opened for one last ride. As the velvet rope fell, a human wave moved towards the familiar clay-colored hill.

In fact, according to Thrill Data, Splash Mountain posted a record wait time of 220 minutes yesterday. That’s just above the previous record of 210 minutes set in 2020, according to the site.

12 hours later they were still there. As the ride began to close, a crowd surrounded the ride and began chanting the theme song “Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah”.

The last riders were said to be performers from the park, and as their trunks rounded the corner, the crowd cheered.

The change was decided in 2020. Disney then indicated it would revamp and “re-theme” the attraction, sharing the news as protests over racial injustice rocked the country after George Floyd’s killing of a police officer in Minneapolis. . Splash Mountain is based on the story of Uncle Remus Brer Rabbit in Disney’s controversial 1946 film song of the south. Inventors creating the new attraction want to pay homage to the history and heritage of New Orleans.

Visitors will “join Princess Tiana and the jazz-loving crocodile Louis throughout the Mardi Gras season as they prepare to host a one-of-a-kind celebration for the people of New Orleans,” a company representative wrote at the time. Zydeco music is played as Tiana encounters an otter, rabbit, raccoon, beaver, turtle and other members of an animal group whose members sing and play instruments.

Disney Parks

Disney was hesitant about a final date for Splash Mountain at Disneyland in Southern California. A representative for Anaheim Park informed Deadline that the reopening date is TBD.

But there was a hint during Disney’s annual D23 fan event in September. When Parks boss Josh D’Amaro made his presentation, he showed a timeline of opening dates, similar to what Marvel often shows fans, to clarify the MCU stages and accompanying film and television releases.

This chart shows the opening of Tiana’s Bayou Adventures at WDW for 2024. The chart also shows an opening for Tiana’s Bayou Adventures at Disneyland in the same year.
