If even a visit to the hairdresser is feared, it is because we don’t always know if the haircut we intend to ask for will suit us or if it will be a real fiasco. To minimize the risks, a method called “the 5.5 cm rule” was invented. by a team of John Frieda salon professionals. An interesting technique which avoids (big) surprises. But what is it and above all how to take the right measures and not make mistakes? We explain everything to you in detail.

How does the 5.5 cm rule work?
If the style and desires of each are two factors that define our choices when it comes to haircuts, the 5.5cm rule can help you get started when you’re the chilly type. To understand how the latter works, know that it is not necessary to have a Bac+5 in mathematics as these are very simple calculations. According to John Frieda’s experts, your optimal hair length will depend on the angle of your jaw.
To calculate this, you need to measure the length between your chin and earlobe. If the distance you measured is less than 5.5 cm, in this case a short haircut would suit you perfectly. If, on the other hand, the size is more than 5.5cm, you will wear long hair better. Obviously, this measurement system is theoretical and it doesn’t take away from your ability to make your own choices based on what you want. But the latter can be of real help if you don’t dare to start.

How to make the right measurements?
It is not easy to take exact measurements on an uneven surface. How to know exactly that the distance obtained which separates the chin from the earlobe is correct, knowing that it is sometimes a particularly angular area? Here is the method recommended by the salon:
- Step 1 : Make yourself comfortable in front of the mirror.
- step 2 : Arm yourself with a pencil and place it horizontally under the chin.
- Step 3 : Place your ruler vertically under your earlobe so that it forms a kind of right angle with the tip of the pencil.
- Step 4 : Measure the distance from the chin to the earlobe vertically downwards for accuracy.

Ok, so what happens next?
The advantage of this technique is that it does not require assistance and can be a real decision factor. But as we told you above, you and only you remain in control of your decisions as this method remains theoretical. Very long or very short hair, dare to wear what you like, because that’s what makes the difference.
