President Joe Biden will deliver his State of the Union address to a joint session of Congress on February 7.
The event is typically a showcase for broadcast and cable networks, as it is packed with pre- and post-lecture reports and analysis. It’s also likely to see a return to more candid living room shots, as news outlets are usually allowed to bring their own cameras rather than relying on state-run fixed views.
This State of the Union will also have another figure in the background of Biden’s speech: newly elected House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who will sit on stage with Vice President Kamala Harris. McCarthy issued a formal invitation to Biden on Friday, and the White House quickly accepted. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters that “we very much appreciate the kind invitation from Speaker McCarthy.”
Jean-Pierre said in a statement that Biden “looks forward to talking with Republicans, Democrats and the country about how we can work together to continue to build an economy that works from the bottom up and from the middle, and our competitiveness in the world. Protect the American people and bring the country together.”
This will be Biden’s second State of the Union address. A few months after taking office, he also addressed a joint session of Congress on April 28, 2021.
