A Royal Navy warship is tracking the movements of a Russian frigate armed with “unstoppable” Zircon hypersonic missiles as it heads for Britain.
The Royal Navy released a statement saying HMS Portland was monitoring the Russian warship Admiral Gorshkov and associated tanker Kama as they entered the North Sea.
The Russian ship is armed with new Zircon missiles with Mach 9 nuclear capability capable of speeds of nearly 7,000 miles per hour, as well as Kalibr missiles.
As the warship heads for Britain, images released yesterday show the ship’s capabilities as it took part in a series of military exercises.

Following today’s announcement, the navy on Monday released footage of HMS Portland pursuing Russian ships in the North Sea, meaning the operation has been underway for several days.
The Norwegian coast guard ship Bergen was already pursuing the Russian warship as it sailed south through the Norwegian Sea, the navy said.
HMS Portland then joined the ships as they entered the North Sea.
The naval ship carries a Merlin helicopter, both of which are equipped with “advanced special operations sonars, sensors and torpedoes,” the navy statement said.
In the statement, Ed Moss-Ward, commanding officer of HMS Portland, said: “Escorting warships in British territorial waters and adjacent sea areas is a routine activity for the Royal Navy.”

The commanding officer of HMS Portland added: “By maintaining a visible and sustained presence, the Royal Navy ensures compliance with the Law of the Sea and prevents malicious activity to protect our nation’s interests.
“Leading the Russian task force alongside troops from our NATO allies demonstrated Britain’s commitment to the Alliance and maintaining maritime security.”
The Navy said that HMS Portland left its home port in Plymouth on Saturday 7 January.
Admiral Gorshkov left Severomorsk on Russia’s northwest tip last week for his first ever deployment. The ship is reportedly on its way to play war games in the Mediterranean, but Moscow has not disclosed the exact timing or route for the warship.
Putin has previously claimed the missiles have “no equivalent in the world,” and their arrival comes at a desperate time for Russia after several setbacks in Ukraine, which has lost nearly 3,000 soldiers this year.
