EXCLUSIVE: Trinity CineAsia has acquired UK and Irish rights to the Chinese sci-fi epic The wandering earth 2which is scheduled for January 27, with previews starting January 22 day by day with the release in China.
The precursor to a record-breaking sci-fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth will be released in China during the Chinese New Year holiday (January 21-27), traditionally the country’s most profitable box office period.
released in 2019, The Wandering Earth Grossed $700 million worldwide, including $6 million at the US box office. The film is currently the fifth biggest film in Chinese box office history and was streamed on Netflix in 190 countries in 2019.
While in the first film humanity moved the Earth away from a dying sun, the prequel follows the struggle to build giant engines on the Earth’s surface to help humanity find a new home. The two films are based on a short novel by award-winning science fiction author Liu Cixin, the first Chinese recipient of the Hugo Award for The three body problem Trilogy is currently being adapted by Netflix as an English-language series.
The wandering earth 2 directed by Frant Gwo and starring Wu Jing (wolf warrior series) with Hong Kong star Andy Lau (hell deal series) joins the cast in a special appearance. The film is produced by China Film Co, Gwos G!Film Beijing Studio, Beijing Dengfeng International Culture and CFC Pictures.
