In 2023, inflation will sow discord within couples

The contents of our fridge aren’t the only ones affected by inflation. A study conducted by the English charity Relating revealed that this increase in the cost of living has also had negative consequences for couples and could cause many breakups in the months to come.

When inflation separates lovers

We already knew that 50% of young parents considered breaking up with their co-parent after a birth. Bad news for couples, parenthood isn’t the only one causing conflict between lovers. The English Association Relatingspecializing in romantic relationships, she surveyed 2,033 adults in a relationship.

Among the interviewees, 25% of men and 14% of women he had already considered breaking up in the past year. And for 35% of them, inflation was the source of this questioning.

Indeed, the association observes that money is often a source of tension within the couples who consult it. Especially when the family income does not allow them to cope with the price increase. Relating he also observes that more and more spouses move in together just to save money, with the risk of seeing this hasty cohabitation fail.

Parent couples, weakened by inflation

Couples with children would be particularly weakened by inflation. The rising cost of living encourages parents to limit spending, especially as the price of free time rises. Babysitter, restaurant, cinema, weekend for two are all luxuries that they can no longer always afford.

However, it’s these moments together that generally allow co-parents to maintain their bond. The association therefore insists on the importance of organizing time together, even if that means exchanging expensive activities for a walk outdoors or a movie night at home.

Beyond the romantic disconnect, inflation can cause all the more stress because it also threatens the well-being of younger people. This stress leads to disputes and tensions which can ultimately lead to separations complicated by lack of means.
