Ukrainian President Zelenskyy predicts victory over Russia after Sean Penn introduces him at the Golden Globes

Last year’s Oscars refused to give Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy a platform, but Tuesday’s Golden Globes fixed that, offering him a chance to speak directly to American and global audiences.

In remarks recorded by Sean Penn, the Ukrainian leader expressed optimism about his country’s efforts to fend off the Russian invasion that began last February.

“The war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning and it is already clear who will win,” Zelenskyy said, adding a warning. “Battles and tears are yet to come.”

China, Iran and North Korea provided material support for Russia’s invasion. Ukraine has now received billions of dollars in aid and weapons from the US and other Western countries, but Zelenskyy said the conflict should not be seen as another world war.

“There will be no World War III. This is not a trilogy,” Zelensky said. “Ukraine will stop Russian aggression on our country. We can do it together with a whole, free world. And I hope that you will all be with us on Victory Day, the day of our victory. Slava Ukrainian [Glory to Ukraine].”

In his introduction, Penn saluted the Iranian women who led a major protest against the Islamic Republic regime that erupted after the death in police custody of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, who was arrested for violating Iran’s laws about women’s clothes. Penn also praised the women of Afghanistan for defying Taliban efforts to deprive them of their freedom and access to education.

“We are reminded unequivocally that the freedom to dream is not just a human luxury, but a human need to be fought for and sacrificed for,” Penn said solemnly, his voice seeming to tremble.

Penn has visited Ukraine several times since the war began, and in November he presented one of his two Oscars to Zelenskyy in Kiev. On that occasion, the actor said: “It’s just symbolic silliness, but knowing that it’s here is going to make me feel better and strong enough for the fights.” If you win, take it back to Malibu because I feel so much better knowing there’s a part of me here.

In his introduction to Zelenskyy Tonight, Penn noted, “If the freedom to dream was a spear, I’m proud to present someone tonight who is the sharpest point of that spear.”
